Updates: 

The City of Marion, Ohio, its Board of Park Commissioners, and the City Administration will be accepting Requests for Proposal for a qualified entity to enter into an Agreement to operate a youth softball/baseball program at the Marion Lincoln Park Ball Field Complex. 

The deadline for a Request for Proposal to be submitted to the City of Marion – Safety Director’s Office is Friday, March 7th at 12:00 pm.  Detailed information regarding the requirements of the Request for Proposal may be found at www.marionohio.us/legal-notices.

 

Updates: 

Mayor Scott Schertzer is announcing final certification of test scores for the Police Department Promotional Exam has been received and that Bill Collins will be promoted to Chief of Police for the City of Marion.  Also being promoted to the position of Police Major will be Jeff Clewell and Jon Shaffer.  A swearing-in ceremony will be held on Monday, February 24, 2014 at 10:00 am on the 2nd Floor of Marion City Hall.

Collins attended The Ohio State University from 1983-1985 and also served as a member of the US Army Reserves during this same time.  While beginning his career in law enforcement at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office in 1985, he also continued to serve as a US Army Reservist through 1989.  Collins held the positions of Dispatcher, Jailer, and Road Deputy during his tenure at the Sheriff’s Office.   In May 1989, Collins joined the Marion Police Department as a Patrolman.  He was promoted to the position of Sergeant, which was transitioned into the current title of Lieutenant, in October 1995.  In March 2000, Collins was promoted to Police Major.  With his promotion to Chief of Police, Collins has held supervisory positions within every facet of the Marion Police Department.  He brings a great deal of knowledge and experience to the Chief's position and will become the 14th Chief for the Marion Police Department.

Collins stated, “I am very proud to be the 14th Chief of Police since 1903 for the City of Marion.  As Chief, I will do my very best to continue the very proud heritage and history of the Marion City Police Department.  To Protect and Serve the citizens of Marion will continue to be our number one goal.  We will continue to live and work by our Core Values, Loyalty, Integrity, Fairness and Trustworthy to maintain the most professional police agency possible. I look forward to the excitement of leading the Marion Police Department in the coming years.”

Shaffer is a 1996 graduate of Marion Harding High School where he played football and wrestled for the Presidents.  Following high school, Jon attended The Ohio State University at Marion and then transferred to Mount Vernon Nazarene College (now known as Mt Vernon Nazarene University) and graduated in May 2000 with a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology (Criminal Justice) and a Minor in Spanish.  

In August 2000, he was hired as a Police Officer for the Marion Police Department and after attending the Ohio Highway Patrol Academy he joined the Operations function at the police department.  Shaffer was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, serving mostly on second shift, with brief stops on first shift and third shift along the way in June 2007.   In his position as Major, Shaffer will be assigned to the Administrative Division.

Clewell is a graduate of Marion Harding High School.  After graduation, he enlisted with the U.S. Army as an Infantryman, receiving multiple military awards during his service.  After leaving active duty, Jeff joined the Army Reserves and is currently a Sergeant Major in the U.S. Army Reserves. 

Clewell joined the Marion Police Department as a Patrolman in October 1995 and graduated from the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy in April 1996.  While serving as a patrolman, Jeff served in the patrol division, as well as the Community Policing Unit.  Clewell co-developed the 1st Citizens Police Academy in 2001.  Jeff was promoted to Lieutenant in November 2003.  In his position as Major, Clewell will be assigned to the Operations Division.

 

Updates: 

With the recent warm weather, rapid snow melt, and heavy rains predicted for Thursday, Feburary 20, 2014, the City is asking residents to help by uncovering the catch basins in front of their properties.  This will help keep the floooding down by letting the wter drain into the storm sewers.  Please clear them of snow, ice, and debris.

Mayor Schertzer is announcing that in observance of the President’s Day holiday, offices in City Hall will be closed on Monday, February 17th.   The following departments will operate as noted below:

  • Sanitation crews will collect garbage and recycling on Monday, February 17th.  Residents who normally have refuse collected on Monday are requested to have their collections at curbside by 7:00 a.m. 
  • Buses for Marion Area Transit will not be operating on Monday, February 17th.  Regular bus service will resume on Tuesday, February 18th.
  • The Marion Senior Center will be closed.

Essential services including airport, fire, and police will operate as usual.

Mayor Scott Schertzer announced that City Hall will be closed on Monday, Jan. 20, in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. However, some city departments will operate on a regular or modified schedule for the day.

  • Sanitation crews will collect garbage and recycling Monday. Customers who normally have refuse collected Monday are requested to have their collections at curbside by 7 a.m.
  • Marion Area Transit will observe normal business hours.
  • The Marion Senior Center will be closed.

Essential services including airport, fire and police will operate as usual.

 

Updates: 

Mayor Scott Schertzer is announcing the following closings and adjusted hours for City Offices during the upcoming holiday week:

  • City Hall - Many departments will be utilizing vacation time on December 24th and December 31st; therefore it is highly encouraged that residents call to ensure the office relevant to their needs will be open.  All offices will be closed on December 25th and January 1st.
  • Sanitation - Sanitation collection will not take place on December 25th or January 1st.  For residents with Wednesday sanitation service, please have collections at curbside by 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 26th and Thursday, January 2nd.  Crews will collect both Wednesday and Thursday’s refuse on each Thursday (If weather does not permit collection of both days refuse, collection could extend into Friday.).  Sanitation crews will also begin collecting live Christmas trees on December 26th.  Live Christmas trees should be placed at curbside on the resident’s garbage day.  Residents are asked to NOT wrap trees in plastic, as City crews will chip the trees at curbside for two weeks following Christmas.
  • Transit - Marion Area Transit will be closed on Tuesday, December 24th and Wednesday, December 25th.  On December 31st, buses will operate until 2:00 pm and will then be closed through January 1st.
  • Senior Center - The Marion Senior Center will be closed on December 24 - 25, 2013 as well as December 31, 2013 and January 1, 2014.

Necessary services including fire, police, and airport will operate as usual.

 

Updates: 

The Marion City Parks Superintendent has announced that on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 the City Parks Department will be closing Quarry Park for the winter season.  The park will re-open in the spring of 2014.

 

Updates: 

Mayor Scott Schertzer is announcing that all City departments will be closed on Thursday, November 28th for the Thanksgiving holiday.  Offices in City Hall will also be closed on Friday, November 29th.

PLEASE NOTE:  As a result of City Hall offices being closed on Friday, the weekly early closure day will be observed on Wednesday, November 27th.  Therefore, City offices will close at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27th, with the exception of the Municipal Court Office, which will close at 2:00 p.m.

The Sanitation and Streets Department will not collect trash, recycling, yard waste, or leaves on Thursday, November 28th.  Refuse collection will resume on Friday, November 29th with crews collecting both Thursday and Friday’s refuse.  Residents who normally have Thursday sanitation service are asked to have their refuse at curbside by 7:00 a.m. on Friday.  Leaf collection will also resume on Friday.  Residents may rake leaves to the tree lawn area to be vacuumed; place the leaves in biodegradable paper bags for City pickup; or take biodegradable paper bagged leaves to the free drop off site at 560 Barks Rd. W. (Park Enterprise Construction).  There is no charge for the leaf drop off; however, proof of City residence is required.

Marion Area Transit buses will not operate on Thursday, November 28th or Friday, November 29th.  Normal bus service will resume on Monday, December 2nd.

Marion Senior Center will be closed on Thursday, November 28th and Friday, November 29th.  The Senior Center will re-open for regular business on Monday, December 2nd.

Necessary services including fire, police, and airport will operate as usual.

 

Updates: 

Mayor Scott Schertzer is announcing that offices in City Hall will be closed on Monday, November 11, 2013 in observance of Veteran’s Day. 

The following city departments will operate as noted:

  • Sanitation crews will collect garbage and recycling.  Customers normally having refuse collected on Monday are requested to have their collections at curbside by 7:00 am. 
  • The Marion Senior Center will be open normal operating hours.  On this day, the Center will be honoring and providing a complimentary lunch for all local Veterans.   The 12:00 pm luncheon will be followed by a special video presentation of Time Magazine’s “World War II – Pacific”.  Honor Flight information will also be available.  Dinner tickets are $3 per person (FREE for veterans).  Contact the Senior Center at 387-6100 by November 8th for additional information and to RSVP for this meal.
  • Marion Area Transit will operate on its regular schedule.

Essential services including fire, police, and airport will operate as usual. 

The Mayor would also like to remind residents of the options available for disposal of leaves:

  1. Leaves may be raked to the tree lawn area to be vacuumed (Residents are reminded that leaves are not to be raked into the street);
  2. Leaves may be placed in biodegradable paper bags for City sanitation workers to pick up; or
  3. Leaves can be taken to the free drop off location at 560 Barks Rd. W. in biodegradable paper-bags.  Proof of City residence is required.
