Stormwater Tips for Businesses

Be Part of the Solution to Reduce Storm Water Pollution!

Information for Industries and Commercial Businesses

  • Storm water picks up debris, chemicals, dirt, and other pollutants as it flows into the storm drains and catch basins.  These drains flow directly to a lake, stream, or river.  Anything that enters a storm sewer system is discharged untreated into the water bodies we use for swimming, fishing, and providing drinking water.
  • Dirt and oil that collect in parking lots and paved areas can be washed into the storm sewer system and eventually enter local water bodies.
  • Sweep up litter and debris from sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots.  Cover grease storage and dumpsters, and keep them clean to avoid leaks.  Report any chemical spill to the local hazardous waste clean-up team so that the environment will not be harmed from the spill.
  • Use a commercial car wash for your fleet that treats or recycles the wastewater.
  • Repair leaks and dispose of used auto fluids and batteries at designated drop-off or recycling locations.
  • Recycle or properly dispose of products that contain chemicals, such as insecticides, pesticides, and paint solvents.  Do not pour them onto the ground or into storm drains.
  • Keep leaves, grass, and other debris out of catch basins.
  • Maintain your best management practices.  Keep chemicals and ice melting solvents dry and contained to prevent spills and runoff into storm water.
  • Report violations to Water Pollution Control.
  • Remember, only RAIN down the storm drain.
