The Marion City Police
Department embraces the community policing philosophy as a
proactive approach and response in combating juvenile
delinquency. This philosophy functions best in partnership
between agencies and community members. It calls for greater
participation by all parties in creating problem solution
responses and programs. The SRO’s responsibilities remain to
the community policing philosophy and include, strategizing,
implementing, and following through with a variety of
programs within the school that have the goal to influence
or effect the behavior of the juvenile delinquent. The SRO
program allows the SRO to explore alternative solutions that
fall outside of the typical law enforcement duties. Certain
activities and responsibilities in which the SRO are held
accountable are as follows:
-
He will
interact with students and watch for signs of criminal
activity or signs of potential gang activity.
-
Respond to
crisis situations and take appropriate action against
intruders and unwanted guests at school and school
related functions.
-
Confer
with faculty to develop plans and strategies to prevent
and/or minimize dangerous situations.
-
Be
familiar with community agencies that offer assistance
to youths and their families. Make referrals when
appropriate.
-
Work in
conjunction with Juvenile Probation and SMART School
when needed.
-
Work with
the school Guidance Department, assisting with students
that may have problems at school and/or home.
-
Coordinate
activities with teachers in Health classes (drug
speeches, etc.) and Government classes (legal issues,
career paths, etc.).
-
Be
available and/or present at extra-curricular activities.
-
Respond to
police related calls inside the schools.
